Last Month On The Homestead

Well, folks, as they say, it’s better late than never… well, yeah, they (people in general) do say that and it’s true sometimes but not always but then that’s another subject all to itself. Anyways, I should have posted this at the end of November, but things got in the way and I got lost with other projects… namely my other sites that I’ve started.

Why did I start other sites you ask? Well, that’s a good question and let’s talk about that a little right now…

Over the last couple of years, the interest in prepping has taken an immense downturn. Several things have caused this downturn in interest despite the fact that we are in more danger now than we were two years ago… you ask, how’s that? How are we in more danger now than we were two years ago?

After all, Donald Trump is in the Whitehouse and everything is just peaches and mega awesome! We have nothing to worry about now and there isn’t any need to prep anymore because absolutely nothing is going to happen with President Donald Trump at the controls and even if it does he will personally come in on his white horse and rescue you and your family, so you don’t need to prep anymore.

Just take it easy and relax… drink beer, watch the ball games, and go spend your dollars on fancy expensive dinners and shiny trinkets because all is well on the Trump train. Let’s just forget about the nearly twenty-two trillion and growing national debt.

And let’s not forget about the EMP threat… yeah, the threat is still there. Oh, yeah, and the threat of a second Civil War, a war that according to U.S.A. Today a third of Americans think is coming

And, guess what…Russian hackers are still probing the U.S. power grid as are other nations… and I’m sure that we are doing the same thing to them. Please, read Ted Kopple’s book Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath!

And, let’s not forget that a hundred years ago, the 1918 H1N1 pandemic swept the globe infecting about a third of the world’s population and killing 50 million to 100 million people… and according to people in the know, it will happen again. Yes, it will happen again, think about it! Common sense people – just because a Republican is in the White House doesn’t mean that all is well and that you can just stop prepping – that’s foolish.

But most people don’t want to think about any of this or they want to pretend that it can’t or won’t happen and even if it does they want to think that they have a savior in the White House that will swoop in and save them before it gets too bad so all that they need to do is sit on their butt and watch the ball games, drink beer and eat potato chips.

People don’t want to think about this stuff because it’s scary and it’s easier for them to convince themselves that nothing is going ever to happen… eat, drink and be happy… all is good. Well, reality check… all isn’t good!

Yes, I voted for Donald Trump against Hillary, but I have enough sense to know that he isn’t Gsome superhuman or a God and really doesn’t have much if any control over most of the threats that could send us spiraling into TEOTWAWKI. Yet, when I talk to people it seems that many have put the man on a God status pedestal when in fact he is only a man and when I speak up and say that and that we still need to be prepping no matter what people give me “that look”, you know the look…

If you stopped prepping because Donald Trump was elected president then you need to pull your head out of your rear-end! All of the threats are still there and other threats are emerging and or becoming more likely to happen! And let’s remember that the presidential election is less than two years away – will Donald Trump win the White House again, will he even run again? I don’t know, but one thing is certain and that is if Donald Trump doesn’t win come November 2020 that a far left liberal or socialist will. Then what?

If anything the election of Donald Trump might have bought us a little more time to prep before the balloon goes up and that’s all… maybe… maybe, not. But the fact of the matter is that the balloon is going to go up and it’s going to pop hard! Will you be ready?

Sadly many have decided to not use this time wisely and instead are sitting on their butts doing nothing to prepare themselves or their family for what is coming. Sure, it’s scary… sure it’s hard… sure you have to get up off the couch and do something, but you had better get with it or suffer the consequences of your laziness and inaction.

And then there are those who stopped prepping because they don’t think prepping is “cool” anymore. When all of the prepping reality shows where flashing on the TV screen nearly every evening some people watching decided the prepping must be cool and so they decided that if it’s on TV and others are doing it that it must be cool and as a result, they themselves started prepping…

Well, after a few seasons those reality TV prepper shows stopped coming on and now not even reruns are being aired. I’m not sure why the shows stopped airing, maybe they couldn’t find anyone else that wanted to have their preps shown over on national television, maybe, it was because the rating slumped, or just maybe “the powers that be” saw that the shows were causing an increase in awareness and that growing awareness was causing the “prepper movement” to grow and they wanted to stifle it.

I’m not sure why the doomsday preppers type shows ended… but it is kinda suspicious that nearly, all of them ended at approximately the same time, however, I do know that it caused a huge decline in interest in preparedness. But that doesn’t mean that the threats and need to prepare aren’t there still. The threats are still there and I think that we are in worse danger of a major SHTF even than we were two or three years ago.

Even when prepping was the “cool and the thing to do” far too many people were “pretend preppers” who liked to read all of the prepper blogs and comment about this that and the other thing, while not really doing anything or very little actual prepping. It’s easier to pretend and or procrastinate than to actually do anything but that doesn’t make the lack of preparation any less dangerous.

Okay, now back to my starting point… why haven’t I been updating this site ten plus times a week like I used to? Because the interest hasn’t been there, so why spend hours and hours every week writing and editing content that few will read? So, I decided that during this “prepping interest slump” that I’d use the time to work on a couple of other projects that I’ve been wanting to work on namely my concealed carry blog at Concealed Carry Today and my newest site Knife Law Insider.

Anyway, things change and I’m starting to see an uptick in traffic and more interest in prepping over the past month or so and that’s great, hopefully, some folks are beginning to wake up once again and that’s great. The more folks who prep the better off we will all be when the balloon goes up… but I have this nagging feeling that time is running out. We might have another year before things start to get really bad and then a domino effect into total economic collapse.

But I digress, sorry that I went on a “rant” of sorts but some things need to be said, or at least I needed to get it off my chest take it for what you want… as they say chew the meat and spit out the bones. Anyways, what have I been doing to prep over the past few weeks… well, let’s see…

As you know I had natural gas hooked up at my house last month… and now I have this heater heating the upstairs…

My hens finally started laying...

Okay, that’s about it for me this month besides some random food storage items and replacing items that have been eaten… One more thing before I end this post… I plan on updating this site regularly and the best way to know when I publish a new article is to click on the bell that is in the lower right corner of the page and allow notifications, that way whenever I post something new you will be notified…

I agree we are in much more danger than we were 2 years ago, and it aint going to get any better

What I’m going to say is not aimed at you, but rather the entire prepper movement. It’s my take on the downtick in interest.

True Believers are unchanged. We still read volumes daily and continue to learn, buy, practice, and have probably had this mindset our entire lives. The others? Short attention spans.

I’ve unsubscribed from many sites that are simply selling opportunities. They bore me to tears and bring nothing to the table. I’ve been suckered in to buying stuff I later regretted.

So many bloggers have little to no life experience and it shows. They simply repeat bits of information they have read about elsewhere. You wonder if they really ever have been camping, encountered a snake, fortified a house, eaten a weed or any one of 1,000 little things.

And let me just say say, I never, ever watch a video because they all end the same way: a push to buy a pill, a knife, a book. You get the idea.

I’m not talking about you tube videos. Those are a wealth of information.

Keep up the good work. We are out here, listening and reading.

I know what you mean at one point it seemed like everyone who had ever heard the word “prepper” had to start their own prepper blog of some sort. I have no issue with site owners selling stuff if they have tested it and it’s actually worth owning for the reader. Sites take lots of time to run and if you keep it updated several times a week it’s like working a regular job time wise and I don’t expect people to spend their lives online writing and stuff for free. However, sites like Survival Life run by media companies whose sole purpose is to make money.

Great post. Agree with everything you said. I never comment much, but have read everything you have shared. Thank you! And Merry Xmas! Hope you have a great Holiday Season and it leads to a new and wonderful year. Be well!

  6. Gloria says:

I’ve been prepping for a long time but since I became aware of the dangers of the coming mini ice age, the Eddy Minimum, I’ve really ramped up my food and winter prepping as food scarcity will become very serious and in my area winter weather will become much colder and longer (and growing seasons shorter and cooler). I’m really glad I don’t have to start from square one on preps because then I simply couldn’t afford it. And when more people become aware, there might not be the supplies nor good prices to do so.

  7. Len Landrum says:

Great stuff. I think all of us were so stressed for 8 years we just had to breath a little and get a second wind. I know I did that. Now I’m back getting ready, but feel like I can plan and really pin point my efforts on weakness’s. Some of us we just franticly hording items of all sorts and not really thinking things trough, as in ” is this really going to be useful”, or even needed or has it been stored in a way that it will be useable after a long stay in storage. I know as for myself and a few of my friends we are still talking things over and thinking things through before making a purchase.
If people have stopped taking all you mentioned in your article seriously all they need to do is look at how far the socialist have come in just one election. If people like me were so afraid of Hillary last election just wait 2 more years. The people that the dems will run in 2020 will make her look sweet.

    • M.D. Creekmore says:

      Len Landrum,

It’s only a matter of time before the socialists take over.

In my view MD …….. they have …….. took 120 years but they are pretty much on top . Saw a great quote from Ronald Reagan today …. something about ” fascism will not come here from Russia but from our own ” . C’est la vie ……..

We all get busy with our own lives and the things we need to do. I’m glad you’re back to the site.

My better half and I have been making up go bags to send to family in other states. Nothing fancy, but they can give everyone a starting point to go by. Like you MD, I tend to read a lot, plus practice what I read where practical. Thank you again for the info you have on all your sites.

  10. Mary in mn says:

No bell here. Can’t find it.
I think we have about 2 more election cycles before the stuff starts hitting the fan big time. A bit scarey.
Socialism is on the rise. It isn’t going to go away . Teach your kids what it is. They aren’t going to learn at school how bad it is….. But it’s free! Yea, right.
Nothing is free but the grace of God..
My next big project is a root cellar/tornado shelter with a secret room. Always wanted a secret room. ( First book I ever read was Nancy Drew and the hidden staircase.) I’m now in my 70’s. I’m gonna finally get it. What fun.🤫

  11. Caroline Halliwill says:

MD, I am glad that you continue to do this blog. My prepping has slowed down, but not stopped. My husband’s health is about the same as last time I posted, but he is not able to walk without assistance and that means me. Now, what we are including in our preps, is end of life issues that our children need to know about. We have had a living trust and power of attorney and advanced directives for many years. We are going through all of these items again, making changes, updating, and getting our wishes for the family in writing. We are also meeting with the local funeral home to prepay funerals (in our case 4 of them; husband, me, DS son, and daughter) and making sure that our youngest son and his wife, and our daughter know what is going on. I have also gone over my husband’s medications and daily routine with our daughter so she can take over, if I go first. Prepping? You betcha.

I don’t can any more because I can no longer lift my arms up to pull things out of the canner, due to shoulder injuries. Even with a step stool. So my daughter-in-law does my canning as well as hers and I do the dehydrating. I love doing it. It’s fun to see what can be dehydrated and what it tastes like when I use them. It also makes preparing soups and casseroles go quickly.

In our house, we are grateful that we managed to get a bit of a breather with Trump in office. However, we do not expect that it will last any amount of time. While it is nice that the younger generation is becoming interested in politics, I don’t recognize what those politics are. Our state went from red to blue in less than two years. I shudder at the thought that in the next two to four years that we could end up with socialists in control and how that will impact our children and grandchildren. We all need to rethink our prepping to include conversations about government control and the inroads they are making into our everyday lives. How is that going to play into how we prep, what we prep for, and what the end results are that we want to achieve? Keep the lines of communication open and prep on. God Bless.

    • M.D. Creekmore says:

I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s health but the good news is that it’s not getting any worse. I’m not sure what the health issues are but maybe it will improve.

  12. Toni says:

MD i read most of your articles and find most of them ring true for me. I am a prepper from Commiestralia where guns are not so easy to come by and a lot of good knives are on prohibited lists and you dont want to get caught carrying anything much that is useful for self defense. personally i carry a tac pen, a tac torch (sharp edges on the front), a leatherman and another folding utility knife that i use at work all the time. I am also a licensed sport pistol and rifle shooter though still to get my first handgun though i know well what works well for me. My prepping more takes the form of tooling and building skills. Soon to be putting up a portable shed to work on things and for tool storage. I am also wanting to get a garden of sorts going here though in the climate here in Alice that is not easy as most vegie plants quickly get burnt by the sun here.
    thankyou for your hard work

    • M.D. Creekmore says:

You’re welcome! Yes, it makes it difficult to be able to defend yourself when you’re not allowed the tools to do so. I’m not sure about the laws where you are but they sound really restrictive…

  13. JKR says:

Prepping is a “life style” that has many beneficial assist in all areas of daily life

  14. billw says:

all you have to do to keep prepping is look at what the dems, socialists and the left are doing!! this country at some time, maybe soon, might enter into a civil war!! it will be up to us to save the country!in order to do that you will have to rely on getting by with what you have or can scavenge hunt or fish and trap for!!

WELL it very nice out here in SEATTLE,WA. and would you believe no rain “YAHOO’ MAYBE this a little off subject I got AUGASON FARM food it was before mark down 75.00$ on sale 92 serving for 40.00$ a big bucket at WALMART closeout ! YOU never have enough food and AMMO!

  16. Caroline Halliwill says:

My husband is a 100% disabled Vietnam veteran. He suffers from diabetes, neuropathy, Alzheimers, and this last year was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. When asked by people what is wrong with him, he jokingly tells them it would be easier to tell what isn’t wrong with him. He laughs a lot because, he says that the alternative is to cry and whine. And much gets done if you whine. When he was much younger, his handle was “Joker.” It still is. None of this will get better so we concentrate on the good days and when we don’t seem to have any, we concentrate on the good moments. And laugh a lot.

  17. acreone says:

MD, read a link you sent about underground water storage awhile back. Yes, very costly. Will
go with 55 gallon barrels. Now about 3/4 done building 1200 sq. ft. home in north fl. Still
cutting trees from hurricane, should have plenty wood for free standing stove next season.
Around here there are pockets of looting still going on, just as you Mary in mn, going to put
in root cellar out of block. Do hear alot of folks here talking of where they fell short in the
aftermath of this storm. Sad it took this to awakin folks, hopefully they will be ready come
the next issue what ever it will be. I am really starting to like the idea of small array of solar
panels, batteries, controller and inverter, for small fridge and lights. When there is not enough
gas to keep the generator going, need back up. Also generator makes a hugh amount of noise
when things are quite. All the best.

  18. Crazy Joe says:

Well MD …….. 2 NEW SITES MEANS NOT PUTTING ALL YOUR EGGS IN THIS BASKET . More diverse for those searching with different words …………. Prepping was ” a way of life ” for about 80,000 years . These past 30 years it became ” Cool ” for many . Y2K helped it along and of course the roller coaster world happenings . I think part of the recent decline is most do not see the forest for the trees mentality .

The best thing anyone can do is begin to or continue to teach younger ones . Firefox series comes to mind . I have 3 Firefox books for my grandchildren who are all under 6 yrs of age . I will be dead but the books will not . How cool is that …… Joe

  19. Goatlover says:

I haven’t stopped prepping either! We’ve replaced old broken down garden boxes with nicer, new ones, including a micro-jet irrigation system. Growing food, canning, and dehydrating food continues. I’ve added quilting to my skills this year. Been studying and accumulating lots of high-quality essential oils for health and wellness issues. Keeping up with geopolitics, and keeping my nose in the Word. We’re closer to chaos than most people realize! I’m so thankful for my little hobby farm and all it provides. Keep on keeping on, folks!

  20. PblvuCT says:

We are pretty new to prepping, about just a year in. Been reading everything I can get my hands on and have found this page to be the most informative and honest and I look forward to reading it every week. All your hard work has not gone Un-noticed. We are (hopefully) moving soon to a 3-acre property where we can have chickens and a bigger garden. I’ve never commented before, however your post moved me to do so. Keep up what you do. All of us out here need you. Have a wonderful holiday season!!

  21. Red C says:

Want to know how much less interest there is in firearms? I went to a gun show last Sunday at 2 PM. There were FOUR vendors for every potential buyer there. When I took my wallet to buy a small box of 22 ammo, the neighboring vendors all looked to see what I was buying. Never experienced that at a gun show before. Now is a good time to stock up on ammo. The price is silver is also very low. I recommend the rest of us preppers take advantage of this opportunity to stock up on supplies.

  22. Toni says:

MD I am looking to get myself a old lathe and Mill ASAP and start teaching myself. I am a self taught blacksmith, saddler and carpenter but metal machining was the trade i always wanted. never got an apprenticeship so will damn well teach myself. The aim is to get to the point where I can do gunsmithing. I grew up on a mixed cattle and sawmill property where we also had sheep now and then as well as pigs, poultry and bees. We also had a vegie garden and slaughtered our own meat and had a small orchard though most of our fruit that we bottled was from other local farms as we could never seem to keep the birds away

    • M.D. Creekmore says:

Cool! It’s amazing what a person can learn by having an interest and reading, watching videos and practice. The more skills the better off we are.

  23. INPrepper says:

I have been kind of prepping for most of my life. I guess you could say I was a kind of person that saw a need to have useful things on hand in case I had a personal SHTF situation from a few days to longer. I have stepped things up the last couple of years. It was definitely not because of the TV shows. In fact, of the couple of episodes I have watched, I thought those people were mostly a joke. There were some good ideas here and there. Come on, if a persons idea of having a doomsday shelter is a castle, they might as well put up a big tower with flashing lights right next to it. I gotta give them credit for trying. The latest show about offgrid homes aren’t really about prepping or homesteading but hippy liberal city folks getting out of the city and claiming they are one with the earth while almost everything they have is store bought. Ahhh, that is just my rant is all.

  24. Greg M. says:

M.D., You are absolutely correct in that prepping should be continued today more than ever. While Trump is doing good things, there are way too many other things outside of his control that could cause us to need our preparations. Your change to a homesteading web site is not a bad idea, as homesteading is another form of prepping that more of us should try to emulate. I like your concealed carry website too. Good info there. Keep up the good work, a LOT of us read and pay attention to what you write, even if we don’t say much back to you. I, for one, say “Thank you” for your efforts.

  25. Salem says:

I’ve never considered myself a “Prepper” nor “Survivalist,” but more a “Manager of Minor Emergencies.” I volunteer with one county EMO, and advise two others. We held a “tower down” ham radio communications test night from the primary county EOC last month to mobiles at various points, to see if 2 meter direct would work. The results were pretty much as could be guessed by the terrain, with one or two weak area surprises.

I devoted almost a week to food preps for a big family Thanksgiving dinner. The rest of the month, I had mostly been preparing for short-wave communications installations. I gathered up new and old items to construct a future radio desk/LP at the retirement retreat, a mobile installation in my car, and improving a grab-and-go kit I had bought and stored. There is no cell service along the rural State 2-lane highways leading to the turn-off to our retreat, and a handheld radio inside the car doesn’t cut it for any distance.

I purchased a number of miscellaneous items I had been meaning to get but had put off, such as a Lithium jump pack/phone charger to supplement the booster cables stashed in the truck and cars. Some of the items came from Amazon. I tried to find your link to use, which once was at the top of the page, but couldn’t locate it. I’m sure you could have used the extra pennies.

    Hi md
I still check the site nearly every Saturday , I miss the wild 400 comment updates from before , or I miss many of the comments anyways!

I just read the black autumn novel by Jeff Kirkham, blew my hair back as much as the one second after …or kennth Royce molon labe or last president
expanding the ideas of what is possible and in how little time
Have you read it ? Any opinions if so?

    That heater looks great !
Again thank you for all the great material in the past, I think you repeatedly moved the needle in a positive way for more people than you will know

    All the best

    • M.D. Creekmore says:

Thank you! I’m actually putting out more detailed and varied content now… but without all of the back and forth bickering, whining, and jibber jabber that the “what did you do to prep this week” turned into.

  27. dennis ward says:

Been prepping for 30+ years, living the good life in the country near a couple of small towns that provide everything needed, a strong community and lots of small organic farms and ranches. Prepping is a way of life, being as self sufficient as possible.

Make no mistake about it we are at war here in the USA, a mixed war, and here in northern California we are being targeted with “directed energy weapons” (DEW) starting all these massive firestorms. It is a scorched earth policy and the casualties in the so called “Camp Fire in Paradise” (sounds so quaint doesn’t it) is truly astounding and not what the psychopathic media is reporting! Hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of people were burned alive in their cars by DEW’s and yet the surrounding trees and utility poles are unburned?? Look at the pictures and the videos with hundreds of incinerated cars along the roads trying to “bug out”?

Take a look for yourself, Some amazing photos! The miracle of a forest fire that burns only houses ? ? These are 360 degree pictures you can view by scrolling with your mouse or pointer.

Sorry folks but fire hoses, shovels, firemen and women and air tankers are no defense against DEW’s fired from drones or satellites. Does not matter how good your bugout bag is either? When they target your car with a DEW it is just like the inside of a microwave oven, it is instantly super heated, causing all the plastic on the wiring and everywhere else in a modern car to melt and you die of toxic gases and then burn to a crisp!

Despite what that psychopath Gov Brown says, this is not the “new normal”, there is nothing normal about it! And yes it looks like a “war zone” because it is a war zone!! And we are the targets. The most “conservative” and self sufficient part of the state has been systematically targeted for destruction in the last 2 – 5 years. They burned out Middletown, Santa Rosa, Redding, and now Paradise!

Got a smart meter on your house? Then you are dumber than a box of rocks and are likely a target. Search smart meters on the internet and see where they have already been banned. Smart meter is like painting a giant bullseye on the roof of your house for the drones or satellites!

So my final thought and question is, got any ideas on how to defend against and make preparations for the next “Directed Energy Weapons attack”?

Don’t take my words for anything, do your own homework, wake up, “you must be present to win!”
