KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT / AP) – The National Rifle Association fired back at Walmart in a Facebook post on the decision to stop selling some ammunition and open carry in stores.

Walmart says it will stop selling handgun and short-barrel rifle ammunition while requesting that customers not openly carry firearms in its stores, even where state laws allow it.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based discounter said Tuesday it will stop selling handgun ammunition as well as short-barrel rifle ammunition, such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber used in military-style weapons, after it runs out of its current inventory.

The retailer is further requesting that customers refrain from openly carrying firearms at its Walmart and Sam’s Club stores unless they are law enforcement officers. However, it said that it won’t be changing its policy for customers who have permits for concealed carry. Walmart says it will be adding signage in stores to inform customers of those changes.

The NRA Institute for Legislative Action said in a Facebook post “The strongest defense of freedom has always been our free-market economy. It is shameful to see Walmart succumb to the pressure of the anti-gun elites. Lines at Walmart will soon be replaced by lines at other retailers who are more supportive of America’s fundamental freedoms.”

  1. The only reason I shop Walmart is for prepping. More and more I am using Amazon. I went from a 22lr to a 9mm because of mass shootings. At my age and given arthritis in my hands, I cannot handle larger caliber weapons. Walmart will still be there for the unawakened. I use Walmart maybe 3-4 times a year and for only certain items.

  2. I don’t shop at Walmart, unless I can’t find what I’m looking for anywhere else, and I usually can. I’ve never been a fan of Walmart, so I won’t even walk through their doors anymore. Jo ann fabrics, is doing the same thing they don’t want people, carrying in their stores, pretty soon every store will have this ban on .

  3. Walmart’s move doesn’t make business sense at all. Most of their business is in the flyover states, and not in places heavily populated by the coastal elites.

  4. I can see using a 9mm cause of the artharitis. There is no point in carrying a firearm if you cannot operate it afectivliy . My stepdad had a 44 magnum and he never liked it between the recoil and the noise it made,he sold it to a guy at work. He kept his python though. A friend of mine met a 80 year old security guard who could no longer rack the slide of his kimber 45.My friend gave him a smith 357 mag and 300 dollars for it. They both did well on that deal.
