Hello, I’m M.D. Creekmore. I’ve been interested in self-reliance topics for over 25 years. I’m the author of four books that you can find at Amazon.com as well as Barnes and Noble. A Masterpiece of Functionality and Durability: The Lodge Cast Iron Dutch Oven

July 4, 2023 M.D. Creekmore

Star rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)

Okay, let’s get into it. The Lodge Seasoned Cast Iron Deep Camp Dutch Oven is honestly a game-changer for anyone who loves cooking outdoors. With over a century in the cookware game, Lodge clearly knows their stuff, and this Dutch oven is proof.

Right off the bat, you’ve got to love the solid construction. It’s made from high-quality cast iron that spreads heat evenly, meaning no more hotspots causing your food to cook unevenly. Plus, it holds heat really well, so your food stays warm long after you’ve finished cooking. The real cherry on top is that you can use it on virtually any heat source, from an open fire at your campsite to the stove in your kitchen – it’s as versatile as they come.

One of the best things about this Dutch oven is that it comes pre-seasoned. If you’ve ever had to season a cast iron pan yourself, you’ll appreciate this. Lodge uses a natural vegetable oil to season the oven, which gives it a pretty decent non-stick quality right from the get-go. The best part is that the non-stick feature only gets better the more you use it, and it really adds to the flavor of your food.

Now, let’s talk size. With a 12-inch diameter and an 8-quart capacity, this bad boy is ready to handle some big meals. Whether you’re feeding a horde of hungry campers or cooking up a storm for a backyard party, this Dutch oven has got you covered. From hearty stews to mouthwatering roasts, there’s not much it can’t handle.

One of my favorite things about this Dutch oven is the lid. Not only is it a deep design, but it also doubles as a griddle. This is an absolute godsend when you’re out camping and trying to minimize the amount of gear you’re hauling around. You can whip up a delicious one-pot meal in the Dutch oven and then flip the lid to grill some veggies or pancakes. Plus, the lid’s got these cool little spikes on the inside for self-basting, which keeps your food super juicy and packed with flavor.

Of course, as with any cast iron cookware, you do have to give it a bit of TLC. Try to avoid using soap when you clean it, and always dry it thoroughly to keep rust at bay. You’ll also want to re-season it occasionally to keep that non-stick surface in top shape.

There are a couple of downsides, though. The first is the weight – this thing is hefty. It’s not a big deal if you’re car camping or using it at home, but it might be a bit much if you’re heading out on a long hike. The other is that if you’re new to cooking with cast iron, there’s a bit of a learning curve, especially when it comes to controlling the heat on an open fire.

All in all, the Lodge Seasoned Cast Iron Deep Camp Dutch Oven – 12 Inch / 8 Quart is a serious winner. Sure, it’s a bit heavy, and there’s a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be cooking up meals to remember. And honestly, with proper care, this Dutch oven could last a lifetime. So, it’s not just a purchase, it’s an investment in some seriously good eating.

Campfire Beef Stew

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 carrots, sliced into 1-inch pieces
  • 3 potatoes, diced into 1-inch pieces
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

    1. Heat your Dutch oven over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil.
    2. Once the oil is hot, add the beef cubes and brown on all sides.
    3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic and cook until the onions are translucent.
    4. Add the carrots, potatoes, beef broth, salt, and pepper, then stir well.
    5. Cover the Dutch oven with the lid and cook over medium heat for about 2 hours, or until the beef is tender and the flavors are well combined.

Dutch Oven Chili

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cans kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cans diced tomatoes
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat the Dutch oven over medium-high heat and add the ground beef and onion. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is soft.
  2. Add the kidney beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper, and stir well.
  3. Cover the Dutch oven with the lid and let the chili simmer over low heat for about an hour to let the flavors meld together.

Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (21 ounces each) peach pie filling
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your Dutch oven to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit (you can do this by placing it over medium heat or placing it in a preheated conventional oven).
  2. Pour the peach pie filling into the Dutch oven.
  3. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the peach filling.
  4. Pour the melted butter over the cake mix, trying to cover as much of it as possible.
  5. Cover the Dutch oven with the lid and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Note: For outdoor cooking, you can use hot coals to bake the cobbler. Place an equal number of hot coals on top and underneath your Dutch oven to get an even heat. You might need to rotate the Dutch oven occasionally for even baking.

Remember, cooking times and heat levels can vary when cooking outdoors, so use these recipes as a guide and adjust as needed.

Pulling Through: A Chronicle of my Back Molar Extraction

June 25, 2023 M.D. Creekmore

The day of the extraction…

You might have already seen this in my community section on YouTube, but in case you haven’t, I wanted to provide you with a quick update.

This past Thursday, I underwent an extraction of a back molar. Yes, I know, it’s not pleasant, but it was necessary due to a large cavity that had previously been filled thirteen months ago, but had unfortunately fallen out.

Instead of opting for another filling and risking the likelihood of the same thing happening in just a few months, I decided to have it extracted. And so, I did!

The experience was rather painful, reminiscent of Barack Obama’s first meeting with Michael LaVaughn Robinson under the rainbow flag.

As I walked into the dentist’s office, I had hoped the tooth would be removed with a single, clean pull. However, to my dismay, that wasn’t the case. As the dentist (who happened to be a woman) began the procedure, I felt the tooth break – an instant of dread washed over me.

When she asked if I was okay, I couldn’t respond verbally as she was still operating on the tooth, so I just gave her a thumbs-up. What complicated matters was that according to the X-ray, the root of the tooth had grown into my sinus cavity.

The dentist continued her work, alternating from my right side to my left. Suddenly, a part of the tooth popped out and fell onto the floor.

Again, she asked if I was okay. I responded with another thumbs-up, and she continued until she finally managed to remove the tooth completely.

In the aftermath of the extraction, I bled for around five to six hours. This was followed by several days of intense pain, the worst I’ve experienced from a tooth extraction. It remains excruciatingly sore and swollen, but I think it’s beginning to heal and the pain is starting to subside, if only slightly.

My plan is to resume uploading on YouTube by Tuesday or Wednesday. There’s so much happening that I’m eager to discuss, but talking is still a painful endeavor.

A Prepper’s Perspective on Bartering with Gold and Silver

April 18, 2023 M.D. Creekmore

In the world of prepping, the economic collapse in Venezuela is a cautionary tale that reminds us of the need to be prepared for the worst. The ongoing crisis that began in the early 2010s has led to widespread shortages of food, medicine, and other essentials, driving many Venezuelans to adopt unconventional means of survival. This article will explore the resourcefulness of the Venezuelan people during this tumultuous time, focusing on their use of gold and silver for bartering.

Understanding the Economic Collapse

Before delving into the specifics, it’s crucial to understand the root causes of Venezuela’s economic collapse. The country’s economic decline began with the drop in oil prices in the early 2010s, which led to a decrease in government revenue. Additionally, the socialist policies implemented by the late President Hugo Chávez and his successor, Nicolás Maduro, exacerbated the situation, causing hyperinflation, currency devaluation, and a devastating scarcity of goods.

The Art of Bartering with Gold and Silver

As the Bolivar – Venezuela’s national currency – lost its value, people had to resort to other means of trade to acquire essential goods. The use of precious metals like gold and silver became increasingly popular, as they retain their value despite economic turmoil. It’s important to note that this method of bartering wasn’t only for the wealthy; even small quantities of these metals could make a significant difference in survival.

Venezuelans used gold and silver to barter in various ways during the economic collapse. Gold and silver served as a stable currency when hyperinflation rendered the Bolivar virtually worthless. Many people started using gold and silver coins or jewelry to purchase goods and services, even for everyday transactions.

The scarcity of food and other essentials led people to barter their gold and silver for these items. A small piece of gold or silver could be exchanged for several pounds of rice, flour, or other staple foods, allowing families to feed themselves during the crisis.

Due to the shortage of medical supplies, people with chronic illnesses were forced to trade their precious metals for life-saving medications. This highlights the importance of stocking up on necessary medications and medical supplies as part of your prepping plan.

As the economic situation worsened, many Venezuelans turned to informal gold and silver mining to sustain themselves. These individuals would then use their findings to barter for essential goods, ensuring their families’ survival.

With the country in chaos, many people sought refuge in neighboring countries like Colombia and Brazil. Gold and silver, being universally recognized, provided a way for these individuals to pay for transportation or even bribe their way across the border.

Lessons for Preppers

The Venezuelan economic collapse offers several lessons for preppers. Diversifying your wealth is essential, as precious metals like gold and silver can provide a valuable hedge against currency devaluation and hyperinflation. Having a well-stocked pantry and medical supplies can make a significant difference in a crisis. Be prepared to barter these items if necessary, as they may become scarce during an economic collapse.

Establishing a community of like-minded individuals can prove invaluable in times of crisis. Develop relationships with those who have skills, goods, or resources that you may need, and be prepared to offer your own skills or resources in return. This will create a reliable support system during difficult times.

Develop skills that can help you survive in a crisis, such as gardening, hunting, fishing, and foraging. These abilities will not only allow you to be more self-sufficient but also make you a valuable bartering partner.

Be prepared to adapt your survival strategies as circumstances change. The Venezuelan people had to quickly adapt to the economic collapse by finding alternative means of trade and survival, such as using gold and silver for bartering.

In times of crisis, the security of your family, resources, and precious metals should be a top priority. Invest in security measures such as locks, safes, and alarm systems to protect your home, as well as a concealed carry permit and self-defense training to protect yourself and your loved ones.

As the economic collapse in Venezuela demonstrated, precious metals like gold and silver can play a vital role in survival during times of financial turmoil. They retain their value and can be used for bartering when fiat currencies become worthless. Now, let’s explore the best types of gold and silver to invest in to prepare for an economic collapse, providing guidance to preppers looking to safeguard their wealth and ensure their family’s well-being during uncertain times.

Understanding Gold and Silver Investments

When investing in gold and silver, it’s crucial to understand the various forms available and their unique advantages. The primary forms of gold and silver investments include bullion, coins, rounds, and bars. Additionally, one should be aware of factors such as purity, weight, and market premiums when making investment decisions.

  1. Gold and Silver Bullion Coins

Bullion coins are a popular choice for preppers due to their government-backed weight and purity. These coins are minted by national mints and are legal tender in their country of origin. Some of the most popular gold and silver bullion coins include:

  • American Gold and Silver Eagles: Minted by the United States Mint, these coins are widely recognized and accepted for their weight, purity, and design.
  • Canadian Gold and Silver Maple Leafs: Produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, these coins are known for their high purity and iconic maple leaf design.
  • South African Gold Krugerrands: As one of the world’s first gold bullion coins, the Krugerrand is renowned for its durability and recognizable design.
  1. Gold and Silver Rounds

Rounds are similar to coins in shape and appearance but are not legal tender. They are minted by private mints and generally carry a lower premium compared to bullion coins. This makes rounds a more cost-effective option for preppers looking to invest in precious metals.

  1. Gold and Silver Bars

Bars are another popular choice for preppers, as they offer a larger weight and lower premium compared to coins and rounds. Bars are available in various sizes, from small 1-ounce bars to larger 100-ounce bars, allowing for flexibility in investment choices. Preppers should consider smaller bars for easier divisibility during bartering situations.

  1. Purity and Weight

When investing in gold and silver, it’s important to consider the metal’s purity, which is measured in karats for gold and fineness for silver. For gold, 24-karat (99.99% pure) is the highest level of purity, while 22-karat (91.67% pure) is also common. For silver, .999 or .9999 fine silver is typically preferred.

Weight is another essential factor, as it directly impacts the value of your investment. Preppers should consider investing in various weights to facilitate easier bartering during an economic collapse.

  1. Market Premiums

Market premiums refer to the additional cost above the metal’s spot price, which includes minting, distribution, and dealer fees. When investing in gold and silver, preppers should be mindful of market premiums to ensure they are getting the best value for their investment.

Mercury Dimes

When preparing for an economic collapse, diversifying your investments in precious metals is a crucial step. While gold and silver often take the spotlight, another valuable option for preppers is investing in Mercury dimes. These small silver coins offer several unique benefits that make them an attractive choice for those seeking to protect their wealth and ensure their family’s well-being during uncertain times.

Understanding Mercury Dimes

Mercury dimes, officially known as Winged Liberty Head dimes, were minted in the United States between 1916 and 1945. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the coin features a depiction of Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap, which was often mistaken for the Roman god Mercury, hence the nickname. These dimes are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, with a total silver content of approximately 0.07234 troy ounces per coin (source: U.S. Mint).

Benefits of Investing in Mercury Dimes

One of the key benefits of Mercury dimes is their smaller denominations for bartering. Mercury dimes offer a smaller denomination of silver, making them an ideal choice for bartering during an economic collapse. Their size allows for easier divisibility and more precise transactions, ensuring you don’t overpay for goods or services.

Mercury dimes are also widely recognizable. As a widely recognized and circulated coin, Mercury dimes are easily identifiable and accepted by most people. This makes them a reliable option for bartering in a crisis, as their value is unlikely to be questioned.

Furthermore, Mercury dimes are both affordable and accessible. They are relatively affordable compared to larger silver coins and bars, making them an attractive option for preppers on a budget. Additionally, these dimes can often be found in coin shops, online marketplaces, and even in circulation, providing easy access for investors.

Lastly, Mercury dimes possess historical value as a piece of American history. While this may not be a primary concern for preppers, it’s worth noting that the historical value could potentially increase the coin’s worth in certain situations.

Investing in Mercury Dimes: Tips for Preppers

Before investing in Mercury dimes, evaluate your budget and determine how much you can allocate toward precious metals. Diversifying your investments across various forms of gold and silver, including Mercury dimes, can help protect your wealth and ensure your family’s well-being during an economic collapse.

When purchasing Mercury dimes, consider their condition and premium. While the silver content is the most important factor for preppers, coins in better condition may carry a higher premium. Be sure to shop around and compare prices from various sources to ensure you’re getting the best value for your investment.

Conclusion

The economic collapse in Venezuela serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness. By learning from the resourcefulness of the Venezuelan people, preppers can better equip themselves for future crises. The use of gold and silver for bartering during the collapse highlights the need to diversify your wealth and invest in tangible assets that retain their value in the face of economic turmoil. As a prepper, it’s essential to be ready to adapt, stockpile essentials, develop survival skills, and build a reliable bartering network to ensure your family’s well-being during challenging times.

The Pretribulation Rapture: A False Doctrine Born from Deception

April 16, 2023 M.D. Creekmore

The concept of the pretribulation rapture has become increasingly popular among Christians, with many believing that they will be taken up to heaven before a period of great suffering and tribulation begins on Earth. However, this idea is not only unsupported by Scripture but may also be a dangerous deception designed to lull believers into a false sense of security. In this article, we will explore the biblical evidence against the pretribulation rapture and discuss the potential consequences of this false doctrine.

The Origins of the Pretribulation Rapture Theory

The pretribulation rapture theory is a relatively recent development in Christian theology, with its roots in the 19th century. John Nelson Darby, a British evangelist and influential figure in the Plymouth Brethren movement, is often credited with popularizing this idea. Darby’s teachings, along with the widespread distribution of the Scofield Reference Bible in the early 20th century, helped to promote the pretribulation rapture theory among Christians in the United States and beyond.

Biblical Evidence Against the Pretribulation Rapture

Although proponents of the pretribulation rapture theory claim that their beliefs are rooted in Scripture, a closer examination of the Bible reveals that there is no clear evidence to support this idea. In fact, several passages suggest that believers will face tribulation and difficulties before being gathered to Christ. Some of these passages include:

  1. Matthew 24:29-31: In this passage, Jesus speaks of the events that will take place “immediately after the tribulation of those days,” including the darkening of the sun and moon, the falling of stars, and the gathering of the elect by angels. This indicates that believers will be present during the tribulation and will not be taken up to heaven beforehand.
  2. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4: Here, the Apostle Paul warns the Thessalonians not to be deceived into thinking that the day of the Lord has already come. He explains that the day will not come until there is a falling away and the “man of sin” (the Antichrist) is revealed. This suggests that Christians will be present on Earth during the rise of the Antichrist and the unfolding of the tribulation.
  3. Revelation 7:9-14: In this passage, the Apostle John describes a vision of a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne of God and the Lamb. These individuals are identified as those who have “come out of the great tribulation” and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. This implies that believers will experience tribulation before being gathered to Christ.

The Danger of the Pretribulation Rapture Deception

If the pretribulation rapture is indeed a false doctrine, it is not merely an innocuous error in theological interpretation. Rather, it could have significant and dangerous consequences for the faith and preparedness of believers. By promoting the idea that Christians will be spared from the trials and tribulations that the Bible predicts, the pretribulation rapture theory may lull believers into a false sense of security.

This false sense of security could have several negative effects:

1. Lack of Spiritual Preparedness: If Christians believe that they will be taken up to heaven before the tribulation, they may not feel the need to develop the spiritual fortitude necessary to endure trials and persecution. As a result, when faced with adversity, they may be more likely to falter in their faith and possibly turn away from God.

2. Lack of Practical Preparedness: Believing in a pretribulation rapture may lead Christians to neglect the practical preparations that could help them and their communities endure the difficult times predicted in Scripture. Without adequate preparation, believers may struggle to provide for their families and communities in times of crisis, which could result in increased suffering and disillusionment.

3. Weakening of Christian Witness: If Christians are unprepared for tribulation and persecution, their ability to stand firm in their faith and bear witness to the hope of the gospel may be compromised. This could hinder the spread of the gospel message and weaken the Church’s influence in a world desperately in need of hope and truth.

4. Vulnerability to Deception: A false sense of security regarding the pretribulation rapture could make Christians more susceptible to deception by the Antichrist and other false prophets. Believers who are unprepared for tribulation may be more easily swayed by false promises of peace, safety, and prosperity, potentially leading them away from the truth of the gospel.

While there may not be specific verses in the King James Version (KJV) Bible that explicitly deny a pretribulation rapture, there are verses that can be interpreted as evidence against it or that suggest an alternative view. Here are a few examples:

  1. Matthew 24:29-31: “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

In this passage, Jesus describes His return as happening “immediately after the tribulation,” which could be understood as implying a post-tribulation gathering of the elect.

  1. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4: “Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.”

In this passage, Paul warns the Thessalonians not to be deceived about the coming of the Lord and their gathering to Him. He emphasizes that certain events, including the revealing of the Antichrist, must occur before the day of the Lord comes. This could be interpreted as suggesting that believers will be present during at least some portion of the tribulation.

  1. Revelation 20:4: “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”

This verse describes believers who have been martyred during the tribulation for their faith in Jesus and their refusal to worship the Antichrist. If a pretribulation rapture had occurred, it might be expected that all true believers would have already been removed from the earth before the tribulation.

It’s essential to keep in mind that these verses, like the ones mentioned in the article, can be interpreted differently depending on one’s theological perspective. The debate surrounding the timing of the rapture is complex, and sincere believers can hold differing views on this issue.

Conclusion

The pretribulation rapture theory is not only unsupported by Scripture, but it also has the potential to undermine the faith and preparedness of believers in the face of the tribulation and persecution that the Bible predicts. Rather than embracing this false doctrine, Christians should focus on cultivating spiritual resilience, practical preparedness, and a strong witness for the gospel in the midst of adversity.

By remaining grounded in the truth of Scripture and drawing strength from the Holy Spirit, believers can stand firm in their faith, even in the face of tribulation. Ultimately, this steadfast faith will serve as a powerful testimony to the world and a beacon of hope in dark times, as we eagerly await the glorious return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
